Audi Piloted Driving: The Near Future, On Trial

Today we are in Munich where we could try the Audi A7 "Jack." So why does this car have a name? Because that is what Audi set up for his autonomous driving research cars (called Bobby, Jack, Robby). Jack is equipped with Audi Piloted Driving, a concept of assisted steering on the highway.

Embark with me on this short test and a plunge into the near future of driving! Today we are in Munich where we could try the Audi A7 "Jack." So why does this car have a name? Because that is what Audi set up for his autonomous driving research cars (called Bobby, Jack, Robby). Jack is equipped with Audi Piloted Driving, a concept of assisted steering on a highway.

Embark with me on this short test and a plunge into the near future of driving!

Quite unobtrusive all in all, the A7 "Jack" starts a little more technology than a car of series including 2 Radars called "LIDAR" in the front and the back. LIDAR for laser detection and ranging allows the vehicle to understand its environment better. These additions contribute significantly to the fact that the car can act "alone."

Sitting beside me, an Audi engineer who will not be allowed to speak while driving: his attention must be focused on the road and the proper functioning of "Jack." Shut up and let me drive! Finally. No. In short, we did not drive very much this was precisely the aim of the game.

In this A7 so few things make it possible to distinguish with a production car apart:
  • The LIDAR
  • The buttons inserted in place of the cigarette lighter
  • Moreover, some interior details that you will discover here in photo and video

After some general instructions to explain the operation of Jack, we set out to join a portion of the highway, playground of this concept which with his brothers and sisters has accumulated 100 000 kilometers of tests at the moment.

The demo seems very much at the point then inevitably to detect more defects they would have to travel much more distance / much longer with, but it already allows to get an idea of what happens soon on our roads.

This type of system will save lives because the attention of the electronics is not diminished while a driver can fall asleep or be bored at the wheel, to gain comfort since it will be possible to devote himself to other tasks than driving over long distances.

The electronics present in the A7 "Jack" will end up in the final version on board the next Audi A8 which means that this vehicle will be ready for level 3 autonomous driving!

As a reminder of The Levels of Autonomous Driving

Some computers, therefore, switches (Netgear) hidden in the right part, a Ubiquiti WiFi terminal ... in short all these devices are there for their modular side: waiting to finalize the vehicle one can easily change components to try various things. This is why development vehicles of this type do not run the streets: they are equipped with equipment that requires the presence of a specialist engineer in case of problem

Thanks to Audi for the ride in the years to come, the future very very close!
